Slain Alameda County sheriff's explorer Karla Ramirez-Segoviano
San Lorenzo, Calif. (KTVU) - Karla Ramirez-Segoviano, who was killed at an East Oakland park, was honored Tuesday at a funeral Mass at St. John's Church in San Lorenzo.
The 21-year-old San Lorenzo High School graduate wanted to be a sheriff's deputy and was dedicated to helping others. Her friends, family and colleagues in law-enforcement remembered her as a young woman who had a passion for community involvement.
Authorities say a couple stabbed and set her on fire in an East Oakland park. Both are in jail, charged with murder.
But on Tuesday, the focus was on Ramirez-Segoviano.
"Karla my girl, today you leave us with great sadness," said Father Jayson Landeza, sheriff's chaplain. "Although you are no longer here, we are happy knowing that you are in a better place looking over us and protecting us."
Her fellow explorers, all volunteers, lined the rows of the church.
It was supposed to be the next chapter in her life.
"Karla had so much more to do, so many more amazing things to accomplish. Karla had goals," sheriff's Deputy Priscilla Silva told mourners.
On the same day Ramirez-Segoviano was laid to rest, Sheriff Greg Ahern said she was supposed to be interviewed for a paid job as a sheriff's cadet..
"But we know now she has an interview with God in heaven," Ahern said.
Sheriff's explorers and deputies came from across the region, including Calaveras and Tuolumne counties.
Adam Lloyd is an explorer's lieutenant from Stanislaus County, which lost a deputy in a shooting over the weekend. Alameda County deputies will be going to his funeral.
"We're all law enforcement, so we're all family<" Lloyd said. "And this is really important to come out and show our support.. It's not just for her but for her post. It's just hard on everyone."
Ahern said, "It's really amazing to see the amount of support that she had because of the life that she lived. But at no time should a mother or father and her family have to go attend the funeral services for their 21-year-old daughter, who was murdered."
