An Annual Memorial Day Ceremony is planned at the Presidio on Monday
The 148th San Francisco Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at the San Francisco National Cemetery in the Presidio. One of the largest Memorial Day events in the nation, the Presidio ceremony regularly draws more than 2,500 people. This year, the event will pay special tribute to veterans of the Korean War, the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Vietnam War, and the 150th anniversary of the creation of six all African American units in the United States Army, later nicknamed the Buffalo Soldiers.
The Memorial Day events begin at 10:30 a.m. with the 191st Army Band leading a grand march of veterans, distinguished guests and historic vehicles from the Presidio Officers' Club to the National Cemetery at 1 Lincoln Boulevard. The formal ceremony begins in the National Cemetery at 11 a.m.
"It is a great privilege for the Presidio Trust (Trust) to support the Memorial Day ceremony," said Michael Boland, Presidio Trust Acting Executive Director. "The Trust is committed to welcoming veterans and active duty military personnel to the Presidio, and sharing the Presidio's rich military history with the public."
This year's featured speaker, the Honorable Quentin L. Kopp, Captain USAFR (Ret.), will give a special salute to the Korean War Memorial, which is currently under construction across from the main entrance of the San Francisco National Cemetery. A former San Francisco Supervisor, California State Senator and San Mateo Superior Court Judge, Mr. Kopp is a veteran of the Korean War, and now President and Chairman of the Korean War Memorial Foundation.
National Cemetery in the Presidio is a designated National Historic Landmark, dating from the 1846 war with Mexico. More than 35,000 veterans and their dependents are buried there.
The event starts at 10:30 a.m. with a parade. It's followed by a formal ceremony that starts at around 11 a.m. Many local politicians and military personnel will speak. At the end, the U.S. Army's 75th Pacific Division will honor those we lost with a 21-gun salute.
This year's parade through the Presidio starts at 10:30 a.m. It begins at the Main Post (on Anza between Sheridan and Lincoln Boulevard) and ends at the National Cemetery.
